In the small town of Toppenish, Washington, which is known as “City of Murals” is the American Hop Museum. The museum starts out, innocently enough, with a 10-minute video, which explains the process of growing and selling hops, starting with planting the seed and ending with sending fully grown hops off to companies.

The museum then continues a bit past the gift shop in a small room the size of two large RVs. The room looks like a traveling exhibit, complete with boards with timelines and heavy machinery. It tells about things such as hop oil, which keeps beer from becoming “skunky.”

After the exhibit is over, the next session awaits, one which takes up about half of the total space. This is, of course, the gift shop. You can buy hop shirts, hop jewelry, hop Swiss army knives, and insulting pool signs. The best part of the whole museum is a model of a hop kiln. The saddest part is the board near the exit, which is missing a word or two.
