6:00 PM, Thursday, October 23, 2008- The Slow Travelers trudge through their albergo door after a long day. They have finished an 11km hike through all of the Cinque Terre (Five Towns: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, Monterosso). They miraculously found a supermarket and also managed to get back to the hotel.

Sierra is preparing to kick off her sneakers and sit back and eat, when suddenly, bending down to the floor, she says, “Oh, God.”

Mom groans, heads over to where Sierra is, and asks, a bit tiredly, “What now?”

Sierra points to the floor, which appears to have been rained upon. Now, it’s not ankle-deep or anything, but it’s deep enough to soak the bottoms of the grocery bags, Sierra’s suitcase, and many things inside. Wet items included:
* 4 out of 6 matchboxes (and a good deal of matches)
* almost all the silverware
* 1/3 of Sierra’s clothing
* Sierra’s notebook, journal, and a Three Musketeers comic book, which Mom assigned for school, all of which were in Sierra’s suitcase.

Actions seen during the rest of the night were:
* The Slow Travelers hanging up Sierra’s wet clothing.
* Drying, cleaning, and throwing out items in the grocery bags.
* Sierra blow-drying her notebook, page by page.

Why was the floor wet? Well, here’s what happened:
1. We didn’t have any heat or hot water, so Mom was messing with the heater.
2. She did something that caused water to run out when our water was fixed.
3. (This part is just a guess) The cleaner came in and discovered the floor was wet, moved the bags, mopped up the floor, and left, not realizing where the water was coming from.
4. More water ran out.
5. We came back and discovered the water.
6. You know the rest.

In closing, a tip for the future is, never mess with those silly knobs on the heater. If someone in your party is messing with those knobs, then make sure to store everything high and dry.
