Things I Learned on the Sound Transit (Which Happens to be Full of Sound)

The Sound Transit, the bus system in Seattle, is the only way of getting anywhere without murdering your poor footsies to the point where they say, “Marge, I’m tired! I wanna go to bed!!” And Marge decides not to differ, so you’re walking around Seattle with two fast-asleep feet that aren’t gonna wake up anytime soon. So you need to know how to navigate the system.
I personally learned a lot about the buses by riding on the 209 bus. We rode this once, but it was enough. On that bus were three women who apparently did not know each other beforehand but felt free to converse about the buses while other passengers were trying to read and/or look at the scenery and/or sleep. I had the distinct privilege of sitting next to one and near another. I know that one worked at KinderCare, due to her smock etc. The others, however, I’m not sure about, so I refer to them as #1 ( she was accompanied by a quiet man) and #2. The KinderCare worker is referred to as “KC.” Here is an overheard conversation that occurred during the 15-minute ride. This is not made up.
#1: One thing I learned about buses is never ride the 174 bus.
KC: (Innocently) Why not?
#1: Why not?? ‘Cause there’s knife fights, spitters, going-to-the-bathroomers, cursers, mean bus drivers, you name it! We had to take that bus for a while when we had to go see his (points to Man) mother! Once we couldn’t get off ’cause of a knife fight! Boy, were we glad when we didn’t have to take that bus any more!
#2:( Matter-of-factly) My friend got stabbed on a bus last month.
KC: How mean are the bus drivers?
#1: Some are real mean! This bus is fine, though. Except for this really mean bus driver who drove it once.
#2: Oh yeah. This dude who forgot to save bus money for a ride back home? The driver wouldn’t let him on!
#1: I remember him! I lent the poor kid some money. He was in tears.
KC: Wow, you can get a full school education on the buses!
#1&2: Yes, yes you can.
The things I actually learned from this bus:
1. Never take the 174 bus.
2. Watch out for mean drivers.
3. Don’t forget bus money!!!!
4. If you don’t want to learn about buses, sit far away from people like the ones described above.
5. Sometimes you just gotta walk.
