We’re going anyway - you could too

Beer: Cheaper than GasWhen we started talking about this trip four years ago gas was less than half of what it costs today and the Euro was less than $1.20.

Everything has gotten more expensive, but we are going anyway. We’ll just do a little more work during the course of the trip than we originally planned, and certainly more work to pay off bills when we get home.

I’ve had scores of conversations in recent weeks where the other person says, “I’d love to do that but I . . .” (couldn’t deal with home school) or (am waiting for better exchange rates) or (couldn’t live a year in a 120 square foot box) or whatever.

And every time I say the same thing: “You could do it too.” I am reminded of 17 years ago when we quit our “real” newspapers jobs to travel and freelance. None of our soon-to-be-former colleagues could imagine leaving the benefits, particularly health insurance. Well, it’s another bill you pay. It wasn’t really “free” to begin with.

And that’s why we’re with Obama in thinking that cutting the gas tax for the summer is short-sighted. We’d save more than you, and we say don’t do it.

As funny as this T-shirt featured today at Shirts on Sale is even beer prices are going up. And a half gallon growler at any of our local breweries still costs more than a gallon of gas — in the $3.38 to $3.50 range for regular in these parts this morning.
